Top dance judge Gary Edwards is being lined up as potential replacement for Len Goodman on Strictly Come Dancing.
The 50-year-old, who once taught Michael Jackson to dance the Cha-Cha-Cha, is close friends with Len as well as fellow judge Bruno Tonioli.
Gary currently appears on the All Access Internet Show of Dancing With The Stars in America and is known for his harsh comments.
A Strictly insider said: “Gary got to know Bruno a few years ago when he defended him on Twitter and they have been friends ever since.
“Behind the scenes Bruno has been pushing Gary’s name forward as a possible. Gary is very similar to Len and has a lot of experience.”
Dancer Anton Du Beke, 50, is thought to be the hot favourite to replace the 72-year-old who will leave at the end of the current series.
Also still in the frame is former judge Arlene Phillips, current judge Craig Revel Horwood and Helen Richey, an experienced judge with Australia’s Dancing With The Stars.
Gary, who was born in Romford, Essex, attended dance classes with Len as a child but is now based in Miami, Florida, where he is married with two children.
He has been nicknamed “the ballroom giant” and is one of the world’s most experienced judges having won more than 30 international titles including British Open Ballroom and British Open Latin.
Asked whether he had applied for the position, Gary said: “Len inspired and encouraged me as a seven- year-old and dancing is in my blood.
“I can say I had two interviews with Dancing With The Stars when it was thought Len might quit the American show. I’m flattered I should be linked with Strictly Come Dancing.”
Gary Edwards is a WDSA (UK) Patron and we would love to see him on the show alongside our other Patrons, Neil and Katya Jones and Karen and Kevin Clifton. More info on these guys here.
